DBS
Direct Broadcast Satellite
DTH Broadcast Satellite
Direct-to-Home Broadcast Satellite – satellites that are in
orbit about 22,800 miles above the earth in various locations
within the Clarke Belt.
DVB
Digital Video Broadcast - a system offered to consumers by
Echostar
Infrared Universal Remote Control
A line-of-sight remote that will control the satellite
receiver and two to four other electronic units such as TVs,
VCRs, DVDs or stereo amps.
LNBF
The Low Noise Blockdown Feedhorn amplifies the signal coming
from the parabolic antenna or dish. It performs on 13V of
power which is supplied by the satellite receiver. A Low
Noise Blockdown Feedhorn will feed one receiver, and a dual
LNBF will feed two or more receivers.
LNB
The Low Noise Blockdown amplifier performs basically the same
functions as the LNBF.
On-screen Program Guide
An on-screen programming feature that allows the user to view
and scroll through program listings directly from his tv
screen. With some units this could be up to a week in
advance.
One-Touch Recording
Refers to one button operation on the remote. The user can
record multiple programs with this on-screen guide. The
satellite receiver will start and stop the recordings at the
proper time.
Parental Lockout Control
Permits parents to set a password to control access to
programming that may not be suitable for children.
Program Browsing
Permits the user to access the program guide while still
watching the television.
RF/UHF Universal Remote Control
Controls satellite receiver through walls and at up to a
distance of 100 feet. Offers control of other audio visual
components like TV’s and VCR’s.
Satellite
Equipment placed in orbit that transmits signals between
station and distributor or distributor to homeowner. Signals
can be either ana log or digital and each satellite has the
option to transmit different signals at the same time.
Satellite Dish
The receiver of transmissions being sent from the satellites.
Distributing stations on Earth receive the transmissions from
the satellites, and then in turn transmit those signals to
their customers at homes around the country.
Set-Top Unit
A device that sits atop the television and converts the
signal coming in from the satellite to whatever signals are
being used by your television set.
Smart Card
The Smart Card identifies the receiver to the network and
authorizes descrambling of the satellite signal to the
homeowner.
